Beliz Gunel is a Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, working on Gemini’s post-training efforts with a focus on tool use, reasoning, and coding in large language models. She received her PhD from Stanford University in 2022, specializing in data-efficient machine learning using structured and prior knowledge, and holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley. During her training, she interned at Microsoft Research, Meta AI, Google AI, and Google Brain. She served as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford Electrical Engineering from 2024 to 2025.

Beliz is an active angel investor and advisor in the AI space, with experience mentoring founders and students across academia and industry. She appears on industry panels and gives invited talks on large language models and the AI ecosystem. Her investment interests center on foundation models, AI infrastructure, and applied AI companies translating frontier models into products.
